Gaming is popular, for many it’s more than a hobby. Games development is also a popular hobby and has been so for quite some time. But what are we hobby developers really doing? We aren’t creating all that many games to be honest. We talk about games, blog about games and discusses all sorts of relevant issues. But the truth is that the number of games developed by hobby developers are few.
Online Games, or Browser Games, give us hobbyist a whole new set of tools to dabble with. And now we can create smaller and simpler games and still reach a large, or relatively large, audience. Thus the popularity of php and sql driven games and flash games.
Now we can sit down, create a small game. Publish that game and continue developing as we learn more and more. With the traditional programming you had to be a really accomplished programmer (ie a professional) to be able to create something worth distributing.
Why? It’s a matter of cost/benefit for the player. He can easily play my small little game on my web-page, but he wont bother to download something that probably isn’t all that good. Thus, the presentation and distribution of web-games is the main thing for reaching large audiences.
